Danida project

WFPD is undertaking its interventions under this DANIDA project in the Mandera triangle and more specifically in Mandera County by targeting the key cross border stakeholders from Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Target Beneficiaries: WFPD will mainly focus on targeting the women and how Their role in conflict management peace building and resilience can be enhanced in the triangle.

The Kenya-Somalia-Ethiopia Borderlands Project-Deris Wanaag

This is a cross-border project seeking to enhance peace and stability, and strengthen social and economic dynamics, in the border areas between Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Project Duration: 7 Months (Pilot Phase)
Project Objectives:

Support effective policy and programming, informed by a comprehensive understanding of the conflict and violent actor dynamics, structures and actors.
Strengthen formal and informal mechanisms (including cross-border mechanisms) to build resilience.
Address community needs to mitigate against drivers of instability and violent extremism.

Women voice and leadership Supported by uraia trust

This project involves strengthening the management and programming capacities of women rights organizations. The WVL project responds to the challenges faced by women among pastoralist communities in Mandera County in accessing justice, rights, gender equality and women’s empowerment together with strategies, approaches and interventions aimed at addressing them.

Some of the interventions under this project include the following:

Increased women and girls’ capacities to understand and claim their rights;
Strengthening of the community based alternative dispute resolution mechanism systems popularly referred to as ‘Maslaha’ for increased partiality and improved women’s access to fair justice.
Increased access to justice and rights among women and girls living with disabilities in the county. Documented evidence on successful strategies and success stories that could be used to inform policy and decision-making on women’s access to justice and rights in the county.

utf-rasmi project (PACT)

Regional Approach for sustainable conflict management and integration. This is a cross border conflict management targeting women networks. It’s funded by European Union Trust Fund for Africa (EUTF).

Some of the interventions under this project include the following:

Convene Women for Change dialogues and campaigns across the two conflict systems (Mandera-Belethawa of Kenya Somalia border and Banisa-Mubarak of Kenya Ethiopia border) to sensitize and build bridges among the Somalis and non-Somalis using the successful W4C model.
Convene meetings between Women for Change and local
administrations and other boundary partners (such as youth leaders and traditional elders) to sensitize communities on the dangers of human trafficking, migration, drug and substance abuse, sexual and gender-based violence. The campaigns will target trafficking and illegal migration hotspot areas of S1 and S3 (Mandera-Belethawa of Kenya Somalia border and Banisa-Mubarak of Kenya Ethiopia border), and where possible, use previously affected youth as campaign leaders to deepen the messaging of the Action.
Convene quarterly women boundary partners’ network fora to discuss the challenges affecting their cross-border peace efforts and draw action plans on how to resolve them. To strengthen the women leader’s lobbying force, other critical boundary partners will also be invited to help
unlock and support the women leaders’ agenda, such as increasing women’s participation in peace agreement dialogues.
Convene joint meetings with BORESHA and local government to select beneficiaries to link to livelihood opportunities.
Conduct youth behaviour change campaigns (Counter trafficking and drug abuse sensitisation campaigns and migration).Support youth advocacy around topical issues (migration, drugs, and substance abuse) through stakeholders’ engagement, drafting of advocacy messages and holding of advocacy forums.
Convene dialogue between women leaders and other boundary partners (Kenya, Somalia and Ethiopia Boundary partners) to sensitize communities on topical issues such as the dangers of human trafficking, migration, drug and substance abuse, sexual and gender-based violence.
Refresher training of school-teachers on CVE and Covid-19 awareness.
Convene Women for Change dialogues and campaigns across all conflict systems S1 and S3 (cross-border)
Cultural events (Abay Abay and Burambur) for women in Murule – Marehan peace agreement dissemination.

Partenrships

In the past WFPD had collaborative partnership programs with the following International organizations/donors.

RE-INVENT- Reducing Insecurity and Violent Extremism in the Northern and Coastal regions of Kenya. This is also a program supported by DIFID through a consortium of implementing partners Coffey International Development Limited, Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), Danish Demining Group (DDG) where Coffey International is the lead Agency. WFPD is implementing the Violence against Women and Girls (VAWG) including FGM, Early marriages, Rape/Defilement cases and all other forms of valence meted against women and girls. The project’s first phase of implementation is ending this December 2020.
Jamii Tahbiti (2016-2019) – WFPD had a partnership with Jamii Thabiti Program on issues around violence against women and girls (VAWG). The program is aimed at addressing the broader causes of violence against women and girls in the four sub counties Mandera east, Lafey, Mandera North and Mandera south (Elwak).
PACT – Kenya- Strengthening Local Cross border conflict management in peace III program.
ACT- Securing Communities against threats of radicalization and extremism in Lafey and Mandera east sub-counties of Mandera County
PACT – Kenya on implementation of Rapid Response on the recent Garre and Murulle inter-clan conflict and Facilitation / coordination of trauma TOT Training in the larger Mandera district (2008 – 2009).
USAID PACT in organizing and coordinating a Regional Women’s Forum held in Garissa in 2008.
OXFAM GB on conflict management and peace building (2002 – 2006).
